Having the first name of Dave (not David by the way) comes with some baggage. People hear the name and immediately one of two things coms to mind, 2001 a Space Odyssey or Cheech and Chong: Up In Smoke. I sat my son Dave down to watch/listen to them so he knew what folks were saying when they quoted them.
In the Stanley Kubrick classic 2001 a Space Odyssey the character David Bowman has several exchanges with Hal 9000 the onboard computer that goes haywire. When Bowman returns to the ship with his copilots body in one scene, HAL refuses to let him in, saying "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that." I've had these words uttered to me multiple times and usually with the same slow drawn out robotic tone.
I'm not a big fan of drug related movies but after hearing countless people tell me, "Dave's not here" I looked up the comedic scene that inspired it. While it is becoming less common the older I (and the skit) gets most folks my generation and up love to recite it in that slow inebriated tone (and repeatedly).
